Text extraction pulls the character data out of a document and writes it as plain UTF-8, discarding all layout, fonts and images. What you get is the words, in reading order, and nothing else.
It is the right choice when the content matters and the presentation does not — feeding a search index, running a word count, diffing two versions, or passing text into another program.
How it works
- 1Load the PDF. Text runs are read from every page.
- 2Extraction. Characters are assembled into lines and paragraphs in reading order.
- 3Download the .txt. A plain UTF-8 file, readable by any editor or script.
When you need it
- Feeding document contents into a search index or a script
- Counting words in a submission
- Comparing two revisions of a document as text
- Extracting a transcript or article body for reuse
Frequently asked questions
- My file produced an empty text file. Why?
- It is almost certainly a scan: an image of text with no character data behind it. Run OCR PDF first.
- Is the reading order always right?
- It follows the document's own text ordering, which is reliable for single-column prose. Heavily multi-column or newspaper layouts can interleave.
- Are tables preserved?
- No — plain text has no grid. Use PDF to Excel when the structure matters.
- Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
- No. Every tool in PDF41 runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed locally, and handed back as a download. It is never transmitted to a server, so there is nothing to intercept, retain, or delete afterwards.
- Does this work without an internet connection?
- Yes, once the page has loaded. The PDF engine, fonts and character maps are all served from this site rather than a third-party CDN, so an unstable connection or a locked-down corporate network does not stop the tool from working.
