A scanned page is a photograph of text. To a computer it contains no words at all, which is why searching it finds nothing and copying from it is impossible. Optical character recognition looks at the picture, identifies the characters and adds them as an invisible text layer positioned over the image.
The page still looks exactly like the scan. What changes is that it is now searchable, selectable and readable by assistive technology — and convertible to Word, Excel or plain text, none of which work on an image.
How it works
- 1Load the scanned PDF. Straighten it first with Deskew Scans if the pages are tilted; recognition is markedly more accurate on level text.
- 2Choose the language. Recognition is language-specific. Selecting the right one substantially improves accuracy on accented and non-English text.
- 3Run and download. A searchable PDF is produced that looks identical to the scan.
When you need it
- Making an archive of scanned correspondence searchable
- Preparing a scan for conversion to Word or Excel
- Meeting an accessibility requirement for screen-reader support
- Finding a clause in a scanned contract without reading all of it
Frequently asked questions
- How accurate is it?
- Excellent on clean, level, reasonably high-resolution scans of printed text. Accuracy falls with skew, low resolution, unusual typefaces and background noise. Handwriting is not reliably recognised.
- Does the page look different afterwards?
- No. The recognised text sits invisibly behind the image, so the appearance is unchanged.
- Why is it slower than the other tools?
- Because recognition is genuinely heavy computation, and it runs on your machine rather than a server farm. Large documents take a while.
- Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
- No. Every tool in PDF41 runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed locally, and handed back as a download. It is never transmitted to a server, so there is nothing to intercept, retain, or delete afterwards.
- Does this work without an internet connection?
- Yes, once the page has loaded. The PDF engine, fonts and character maps are all served from this site rather than a third-party CDN, so an unstable connection or a locked-down corporate network does not stop the tool from working.
