A PDF describes where marks sit on a page; a Word document describes a flow of paragraphs. Converting between them is interpretation, not translation, and the quality of the result depends on how faithfully that interpretation is made.
This converter classifies every page before reproducing it. A page of flowing text becomes real, reflowable paragraphs. A scan with no extractable text becomes a picture. A page where text sits over artwork gets both: the graphics are rasterised as a background, and each paragraph is pinned over it in a text box at the position it occupied — so the page looks like the original and its words stay editable.
How it works
- 1Load the PDF. Each page is analysed to decide how it can best be reproduced.
- 2Conversion. Text is grouped into runs and paragraphs, headings are detected relative to the document's own body size, and colour, orientation and position are read from the glyph data.
- 3Download the .docx. A standard Office Open XML document opens in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs.
When you need it
- Reusing the text of a report whose source file has been lost
- Editing a contract received only as a PDF
- Extracting a section for quotation in another document
- Making a legacy document accessible to a screen reader
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my scanned document come out as pictures?
- Because it contains no extractable text — only an image of text. Run OCR PDF first to add a recognised text layer, then convert.
- Will the layout match exactly?
- Closely, but the two formats have genuinely different models. Text-heavy pages reflow well; complex multi-column artwork is reproduced as a pinned layout so it does not spill onto extra pages.
- Are headings detected reliably?
- Heading size is judged relative to the document's own body text rather than against a fixed point threshold, so a report set in 14pt does not turn every paragraph into a heading and a dense 7pt document still gets them.
- Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
- No. Every tool in PDF41 runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed locally, and handed back as a download. It is never transmitted to a server, so there is nothing to intercept, retain, or delete afterwards.
- Does this work without an internet connection?
- Yes, once the page has loaded. The PDF engine, fonts and character maps are all served from this site rather than a third-party CDN, so an unstable connection or a locked-down corporate network does not stop the tool from working.
