A spreadsheet needs something no PDF ever states: a grid. Tables in a PDF are just text positioned on a page, with the rows and columns existing only in the reader's eye.
This converter reconstructs that grid. Rows are lines sharing a baseline, with the tolerance scaled to the type size. Columns are the vertical corridors of whitespace running down the page — measured so a corridor must beat a word space, or "Jean Dupont" would be split across two cells. It then reads the shading and rules from a render of the page, because in a financial statement or a printed planner the fill colour carries meaning that text extraction recovers none of.
How it works
- 1Load the PDF. Text positions and page renders are both read.
- 2Grid reconstruction. Rows, columns, merged cells, fills and rules are inferred, then snapped onto the boundaries the page actually drew.
- 3Download the .xlsx. One sheet per page, with column widths, row heights, fills and borders.
When you need it
- Getting a bank or credit-card statement into a spreadsheet
- Recovering figures from a published financial report
- Turning a printed planner or timetable back into editable cells
- Extracting a price list for comparison
Frequently asked questions
- My spreadsheet came out in tiny type. Why?
- Because the source was printed at "fit to page" and the true measurements really are 3pt text in 5pt rows. Type, column widths and row heights are enlarged by one common factor so the workbook is readable at 100% without distorting the proportions.
- Are cell colours preserved?
- Yes. A cell's fill is the most common colour in its interior — never the average, or a rule crossing a blue cell would turn it blue-grey. Cells that carry only shading are still emitted, styled and empty, because dropping them would lose the layout.
- Can I get just the data without the formatting?
- Yes — strict table mode skips the page render entirely and extracts the values alone.
- Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
- No. Every tool in PDF41 runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed locally, and handed back as a download. It is never transmitted to a server, so there is nothing to intercept, retain, or delete afterwards.
- Does this work without an internet connection?
- Yes, once the page has loaded. The PDF engine, fonts and character maps are all served from this site rather than a third-party CDN, so an unstable connection or a locked-down corporate network does not stop the tool from working.
