Deskew Scans

Automatically detect and straighten tilted or slanted scanned pages.

Tailored Parameters

Fine-tune exact dimensions, qualities, ranges, or security tokens for this feature.

Instant Local Processing

Zero latency local computation directly in your browser session.

Same-Page Workflow

Re-run operations repeatedly without losing your active tool workspace.

Pages fed through a scanner at a slight angle come out tilted by a degree or two. It looks careless, it wastes margin space, and it measurably degrades character recognition, which expects text to run horizontally.

Deskewing detects the dominant angle of the text lines on each page and rotates the page back to level, one page at a time — because a stack fed by hand is rarely tilted by the same amount twice.

How it works

  1. 1Load the scan. Each page is analysed independently.
  2. 2Detection and correction. The slant of the text lines is measured and the page rotated to compensate.
  3. 3Download. Level pages, ready for OCR or distribution.

When you need it

  • Cleaning up a batch scanned through a sheet feeder
  • Preparing scans before running OCR, for better accuracy
  • Tidying photographed documents before archiving
  • Straightening pages before splitting a spread down the middle

Frequently asked questions

What if a page is upside down rather than tilted?
That is a rotation, not a skew. Use Rotate Pages for quarter turns; deskewing handles small angles.
Does correcting the angle lose quality?
Rotating a bitmap resamples it, so there is a slight softening. It is almost always worth it for the gain in OCR accuracy.
Can it fail to detect the angle?
On pages with very little text or dense artwork there may be no reliable text baseline to measure, and the page is left alone rather than rotated on a guess.
Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
No. Every tool in PDF41 runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed locally, and handed back as a download. It is never transmitted to a server, so there is nothing to intercept, retain, or delete afterwards.
Does this work without an internet connection?
Yes, once the page has loaded. The PDF engine, fonts and character maps are all served from this site rather than a third-party CDN, so an unstable connection or a locked-down corporate network does not stop the tool from working.
