Bates numbering applies a unique, sequential identifier to every page of a set — typically a prefix, a zero-padded number and sometimes a suffix. It is the standard practice in legal discovery, and it continues across files rather than restarting for each one.
The purpose is unambiguous reference: any party can cite a single page of a large production and everyone knows exactly which page is meant.
How it works
- 1Load the documents. Add every file in the production; the sequence runs across all of them.
- 2Define the stamp. Set the prefix, the starting number, the padding width and the position.
- 3Download. Each page carries a unique identifier in an unbroken sequence.
When you need it
- Preparing a document production for litigation discovery
- Indexing an evidence bundle for a hearing
- Numbering a regulatory or audit submission for reference
- Tracking pages across a multi-file corporate filing
Frequently asked questions
- Does the sequence continue across files?
- Yes. That is the defining behaviour: numbering is continuous across the whole production so every page is unique.
- Can I control the padding?
- Yes. Set the width so numbers sort correctly as text — ABC-000001 rather than ABC-1.
- How does this differ from page numbers?
- Page numbers describe a position within one document. A Bates number is a permanent unique identifier across an entire set, and it never restarts.
- Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
- No. Every tool in PDF41 runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed locally, and handed back as a download. It is never transmitted to a server, so there is nothing to intercept, retain, or delete afterwards.
- Does this work without an internet connection?
- Yes, once the page has loaded. The PDF engine, fonts and character maps are all served from this site rather than a third-party CDN, so an unstable connection or a locked-down corporate network does not stop the tool from working.
