Same-Page Workflow

A PDF keeps an index — the cross-reference table — that tells a reader where each object lives in the file. When that index is damaged by an interrupted download, a failing disk or a program that crashed mid-write, readers refuse to open a file whose content is largely intact.
Repair rebuilds the index by scanning the file for the objects themselves, then writes a fresh, consistent document around whatever it finds.
How it works
- 1Load the damaged file. Files that will not open elsewhere are the point of this tool.
- 2Rebuild. Objects are located directly and a new cross-reference table is constructed.
- 3Download and verify. Open the repaired file and check that the pages you needed are present.
When you need it
- Recovering a file that was truncated by an interrupted download
- Opening a document a reader rejects as corrupt
- Salvaging a file recovered from a failing drive
- Fixing a PDF written by software that crashed part-way
Frequently asked questions
- Can every damaged file be repaired?
- No. If the bytes of a page are genuinely missing, nothing can reconstruct them. Repair recovers what survives — which is often most of the document.
- Will I lose anything?
- Possibly bookmarks, form fields or annotations whose objects were damaged. Page content is the priority.
- The file still will not open. What now?
- The damage extends beyond the index. Try recovering an earlier copy or a backup.
- Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
- No. Every tool in PDF41 runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed locally, and handed back as a download. It is never transmitted to a server, so there is nothing to intercept, retain, or delete afterwards.
- Does this work without an internet connection?
- Yes, once the page has loaded. The PDF engine, fonts and character maps are all served from this site rather than a third-party CDN, so an unstable connection or a locked-down corporate network does not stop the tool from working.
