Converting to greyscale removes colour information from text, vector graphics and images, mapping everything to shades of grey.
Two practical reasons dominate: monochrome files are considerably smaller, and a document destined for a black-and-white printer looks better when you control the conversion yourself than when the printer driver guesses at it.
How it works
- 1Load the PDF. All colour content is identified.
- 2Convert. Colours are mapped to greyscale across text, vectors and images.
- 3Download. A monochrome document, usually noticeably smaller.
When you need it
- Preparing a document for a black-and-white printer
- Reducing file size where colour adds nothing
- Meeting a submission requirement for monochrome documents
- Neutralising colour coding that will not survive printing anyway
Frequently asked questions
- Can I get the colour back?
- Not from the converted file. Keep your original.
- Will colour-coded information become unreadable?
- Possibly. Two colours of similar brightness map to nearly the same grey. Check anything that relies on colour to convey meaning.
- How much smaller will the file be?
- It varies with the image content — often a third to a half for photograph-heavy documents, very little for text-only ones.
- Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
- No. Every tool in PDF41 runs inside your browser tab using WebAssembly and JavaScript. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed locally, and handed back as a download. It is never transmitted to a server, so there is nothing to intercept, retain, or delete afterwards.
- Does this work without an internet connection?
- Yes, once the page has loaded. The PDF engine, fonts and character maps are all served from this site rather than a third-party CDN, so an unstable connection or a locked-down corporate network does not stop the tool from working.
